  • In 2024, russia caused over 42 billion UAH in environmental damage to Ministry of Defence facilities

    The amount of environmental damage caused by russia to the facilities of the Ministry of Defence of Ukraine exceeded UAH 42 billion in 2024.

    Experts from the Ministry of Defence inspected 61 military facilities that suffered environmental damage as a result of russian missile, bomb and artillery strikes and recorded the following damage:

    • Soil contamination with destruction waste: UAH 40,260,446,746.
    • Soil contamination by oil products: UAH 1,564,980,137.
    • Fugitive emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere: UAH 96,850,034.
    • Damage to the forest fund: UAH 145,293,946.

    The working group that conducted the review included representatives of the Main Directorate of Mine Action, Civil Protection and Environmental Safety, the Centre of Excellence for Mine Action and Environmental Safety, and the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine.

    Materials with documented facts of environmental damage and damage calculations were submitted to the Prosecutor General’s Office for appropriate action and inclusion in open criminal proceedings.
