Temporary protection for Ukrainian citizens in EU countries should continue until lasting peace is achieved: Oleksiy Chernyshov
The Council of the European Union has extended the Temporary Protection Directive for Ukrainian refugees until March 2026. The Ministry of National Unity is closely monitoring the situation regarding the legal status of Ukrainian refugees in Europe.
“During my visits to countries hosting the largest numbers of Ukrainians, I actively collaborate with the governments of European states and the European Commission to ensure stability for our citizens abroad,” said Oleksiy Chernyshov, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Unity of Ukraine.
According to him, discussions about changing the status of Ukrainians abroad can only begin once long-term and sustainable peace is established in Ukraine.
“Based on information published in the media, some EU countries are considering the possibility of adapting their policies towards Ukrainian refugees if the situation in Ukraine changes. We are closely following these developments and actively participating in international consultations to defend the interests of Ukrainians,” Oleksiy Chernyshov noted.
The Ministry of National Unity continues its efforts to ensure that every Ukrainian temporarily residing abroad has access to the necessary support and protection.
