International partners channel EUR 42.5 million to restore NSC Arch: Svitlana Grynchuk
Additional donor contributions from the United Kingdom, the European Commission and France were announced at the EBRD headquarters in London, where a meeting of the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account Assembly was held.
The meeting participants discussed plans for temporary repairs of the NSC and further work to fully restore the functionality of the Arch.
"The Assembly acknowledged our progress in inspecting the building structures and performing preparatory work. Our partners also understand that the cost of restoration may exceed the existing resources of the Account, so additional donor support is extremely important, as well as the expertise and involvement of relevant international specialized organizations," Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, wrote on her Facebook page.
The Minister reminded that in March of this year, EUR 400,000 had been allocated from the administrative budget of the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account Assembly to investigate the damage to the NSC Arch.
So far, the partners have taken several other important steps. The following countries have announced their contributions to the restoration of the NBU:
- France - EUR 10.6 million;
- UK - EUR 6.9 million;
- European Commission - EUR 25 million.
Grant Agreement No. 5 also provides for the allocation of EUR 5 million to analyze the damage to the NSC, develop and implement a number of measures to temporarily repair the Arch.
"For us, this is another proof that Ukraine is not left alone with its challenges, but has reliable friends. We are grateful to the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development for its systematic support of Ukraine and deep expertise, to all the contributing countries of the Account, the IAEA and other representatives of the international community for their assistance from the first day of the full-scale war, for their quick response and support after the incident at the Chornobyl NPP in February this year, and for their attention to the current state of the NSC. Only by joint efforts can we ensure nuclear safety not only in Ukraine but also in other European countries," Svitlana Grynchuk said.
