Ukraine continues to work on attracting investment in energy projects and improving the protection of Ukrainian energy infrastructure from attacks by russia. This was discussed by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine Yuliia Svyrydenko and U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Energy Resources Geoffrey Pyatt during a meeting in Washington.

Yuliia Svyrydenko expressed her gratitude for the substantial support provided to the Ukrainian energy sector during the war. The parties discussed measures to strengthen the Ukrainian energy system and protect energy infrastructure from russian attacks this winter.

“We discussed with Geoffrey Pyatt specific projects in Ukraine’s energy sector that could attract American investment. In particular, projects aimed at increasing domestic energy production and upgrading existing infrastructure to reduce dependence on imports.

We also raised the issue of additional protection for energy infrastructure, additional air defence systems and preparations for the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP28) to be held in early December,” said Yuliia Svyrydenko.

Geoffrey Pyatt noted that it was important for the United States to help Ukraine get through this heating season, as the risk of russian attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure remained high. He also stressed that it was important for Ukraine to build an independent, decentralised energy system that would be more resilient and secure in the face of possible attacks by russia, and that the U.S. stood ready to help.
