Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity until 2035 approved: Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture

Ukraine has defined long-term priorities for state policy in the field of biological diversity conservation and wild nature protection. The Government adopted the relevant order approving the Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of Ukraine until 2035 and the operational action plan for its implementation in 2026–2028 at a meeting on 10 June.

The current state of biodiversity and ecosystems is deteriorating due to human impact, climate change and the consequences of russian aggression. Natural habitats and rare plant and animal species are under threat. That is why the preservation of wildlife and the restoration of ecosystems are among the key tasks of Ukraine’s environmental policy.

“The Strategy is a practical action plan for the coming years. It will help better protect valuable natural areas, restore ecosystems and involve communities in nature conservation. At the same time, the document brings Ukraine closer to European standards in the field of biodiversity protection,” noted Oleksandr Krasnolutskyi, Deputy Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture.

The Strategy outlines the long-term priorities of state policy in the field of biodiversity and the ways to achieve them by 2035. Among the key tasks are halting the loss of species and natural habitats, restoring degraded ecosystems, strengthening the protection of wild nature, and integrating nature conservation approaches into various areas of state policy.

The document is also aimed at fulfilling Ukraine’s international and European integration commitments, strengthening cooperation between government bodies, the scientific community and communities, and implementing a systematic approach to natural resource management.

The implementation of the Strategy will contribute to improving the state of the environment, increasing the resilience of ecosystems and preserving Ukraine’s natural heritage for future generations.

Background

The Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of Ukraine is oriented towards the implementation of the global goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and the provisions of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the fulfilment of which remains a priority for Ukraine despite the challenges of wartime.

The Strategy includes 23 strategic tasks for the conservation of biological diversity, which correspond to the strategic goals of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework until 2030, while also taking into account Ukraine’s specific circumstances.

The Strategy for the Conservation of Biological Diversity of Ukraine was developed with the support of the UNDP-GEF Global Biodiversity Framework Early Action Support project.
