The Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the British Council in Ukraine have started the next stage of professional development of English language teachers in secondary schools, the main purpose of which is to ensure continuity and sustainability in foreign language teaching in accordance with the New Ukrainian School Concept.
"During six months, more than 3,000 English teachers will be trained according to the updated model proposed to us by the British Council in Ukraine. Two hundred coaches, who in 2018-2019 successfully trained primary school teachers, will now teach teachers in grades 5-9 in a distant format using modern information technology," said acting Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Serhii Shkarlet.
The model includes the following components:
Theoretical - teacher training in the online course "Teaching English in a new context: basic secondary education." The course consists of 5 modules and covers the following topics:
Practical - mastering the resources of the Online Teacher Community platform, participating in discussions, forums, workshops and applying the acquired knowledge and skills in class. Each teacher will have their own portfolio on the online platform.
The trainers will hold workshops for teachers on the Online Teacher Community platform every month from November 2020 to March 2021. The purpose of this format is to learn through reflection, feedback, sharing experiences and modeling different situations. With the support of trainers, teachers will master communication methods, apply the acquired knowledge and skills in their own teaching practice, analyzing their own activities and the activities of students.
In addition, during the program teachers must master the skills of using electronic resources, which are collected on the educational platform NUS-English.com.ua. In particular, for primary school English teachers there are collected materials in the following areas: "Student understanding", "Student motivation", "Lesson planning in a new context", "Learning process management", "Distance learning", "Key skills of the 21st century", "Assessment for learning".
Upon successful completion of the professional development program in full, all participants will receive a certificate from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the British Council.
