  • Ruslan Strilets: Ukraine and EU agree to combine initiatives to preserve and expand forests

Ruslan Strilets, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, together with Virginijus Sinkevičius, European Commissioner for Environment, Oceans and Fisheries, paid a working visit to a seed breeding center in Zhytomyr region.

The center was built during the full-scale invasion and is located just 15 km from belarus. The European Commissioner was shown the operation of a modern system of three-level video surveillance of forests and was presented with interim results and plans for forestry reform.

“4 billion trees in the EU. We agreed with Mr. Sinkevičius to combine initiatives to preserve and expand forests. This proves once again that Ukraine is part of the EU. The Ukrainian initiative on forest restoration is fully in line with the new EU Forest Strategy for 2030, which envisages planting 3 billion trees by 2030, as well as the UN Strategic Plan for Forests 2017-2030, with one of the goals being to increase the forest area by 3%,” said Ruslan Strilets.

According to Virginijus Sinkevičius, Ukraine’s forestry practices during active hostilities are exemplary for Europe, as Ukraine continues to plant forests in the de-occupied territories where they were completely burned, as well as to implement the pre-war reforestation program.

The European Commissioner expressed confidence that russia’s armed aggression could not be an obstacle to building bridges between Ukraine and the EU, but rather motivated to unite even more.
