Svitlana Grynchuk: russia’s presence in energy markets poses a systemic risk to global security
Ukraine urges the international community to reduce russia’s influence on global energy markets and support resource diversification, particularly in the nuclear energy sector. This was emphasized by Ukraine’s Energy Minister, Svitlana Grynchuk, during the Roadmaps to New Nuclear 2025 conference held in Paris.
The Minister highlighted that investing in advanced nuclear technologies enables Ukraine to become a reliable regional energy hub and help Europe fully eliminate its dependence on russian resources. “We have already abandoned our dependence on russia for nuclear fuel supplies and view nuclear energy as the foundation for post-war recovery and climate neutrality,” Svitlana Grynchuk noted.
During a thematic panel, the Minister shared Ukraine’s experience in securing nuclear fuel: Ukrainian uranium is mined domestically, processed in Canada, enriched in Europe, and manufactured into fuel assemblies by an American company before being returned to power Ukrainian reactors. Efforts are also underway to develop domestic uranium mining resources and prepare for the launch of national production of fuel assemblies.
Svitlana Grynchuk outlined prospects for the development of nuclear energy in Ukraine, including expanding the capacity of large reactors and implementing small modular reactors. “Nuclear energy is key to post-war recovery. In the reconstruction process, we aim to set new global standards in energy and innovation,” the Minister emphasized.
The Head of the Ministry of Energy expressed gratitude to international partners for their support and mutual understanding, particularly to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, the Nuclear Energy Agency, and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy of the Republic of Korea for organizing the conference and providing a platform for constructive dialogue.
