The Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and the Prime Minister of the Slovak Republic Eduard Heger visited the Uzhhorod - Vyšné Nemecké checkpoint on the joint Ukrainian-Slovak border during a working trip to Zakarpattia region.

Denys Shmyhal and Eduard Heger inspected the progress of reconstruction of existing and construction of new infrastructure facilities at the Uzhhorod checkpoint in the passenger section and the construction of a road junction.

"Reconstruction of the Uzhhorod checkpoint will allow citizens to quickly and comfortably cross the border with Slovakia as well as to boost cooperation between our countries. Work on pedestrian passage is currently underway. It is also planned to modernize and provide technical reequipment of the checkpoint," said Denys Shmyhal.

In particular, it is planned to complete the reconstruction of the passenger section at the Uzhhorod checkpoint, build a customs warehouse, restore the cargo terminal canopies and install a scanning system for cars. According to the State Border Guard Service, 8 lines for passenger vehicles, 2 lines for buses and 2 lines for passenger communications will be opened. Currently, it is the only checkpoint with Slovakia that provides customs clearance for all types of vehicles and passengers as well.

According to the Prime Minister of Ukraine, currently, the topic of interest remains to conclude the necessary agreements with Slovakia, thereby allowing the introduction of pedestrian and bicycle traffic at the Uzhhorod - Vyšné Nemecké checkpoint.

"The relevant protocol is being considered by the Slovak side. We are looking forward to a constructive discussion of these issues during our bilateral meetings," said Denys Shmyhal.

The Head of the Ukrainian Government also stressed that Ukraine is interested in developing cooperation with Slovakia in the customs sphere. According to him, one of the current areas of such cooperation is the exchange of information between the customs authorities of both countries and the implementation of a pilot project for the exchange of preliminary information.
