According to the GTS Operator of Ukraine, the price of natural gas in Europe has reached the highest levels in the last 13 years - more than USD 450 per cubic meter. Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stressed during the Question Time for the Government at the Verkhovna Rada.
Denys Shmyhal noted, such a gas price hits the highest showing since 2008, and if the authorities had not taken timely measures, Ukrainian households would be forced to pay about UAH 13-15 per cubic meter.
"Thanks to the synergy of the Government, the Office of the President, the Verkhovna Rada, the National Energy and Utilities Regulatory Commission (NEURC), we launched an annual product on the gas market in May. Thereby we have protected people from sharp price hikes. "Naftogaz consumers, for example, now pay UAH 7 96 kopecks per cubic meter," the Head of Government said.
The Prime Minister stressed that the authority to set tariffs for heating and hot water had been fully transferred to local authorities. In addition, gas companies have provided local authorities with alternatives in the shape of long-term contracts that will allow them to obtain natural gas stably without price fluctuation.
Moreover, Denys Shmyhal emphasized that the Government is keeping the process of preparation for the heating season under control. According to him, by late June, the volume of gas in underground gas storage facilities exceeded 16 billion cubic meters, which exceeded the showings of 2019.
"Work is also intensified to provide the country with the necessary amount of coal. All this preparation process is taking place daily. The Ministry for Communities and Territories Development will report on the situation on a weekly basis closer to the beginning of autumn," the Prime Minister summed up.
