Domestic gas production is a step towards Ukraine's energy independence. This statement was made by Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal during a speech at the "Presentation of strategic directions for the development of gas production", which took place in Kyiv on September 8. The event was also attended by Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources Roman Abramovsky, Chairman of the Board of Naftogaz Andriy Kobolev, Chief Operating Officer of Naftogaz Group Otto Waterlander, MPs and others.
The Prime Minister dwelled on that Ukraine should strengthen its energy independence, and this will be triggered by the development of its own gas production.
"Today we have unhindered access to the EU gas market, which also helps reduce energy imports. But at meetings with the President, we have constantly raised the issue of increasing our own production. It is necessary to conduct appropriate exploration phase, complete the already partially implemented exploration plans and promptly begin production. For its part, the Government is exerting every effort to do such work, and we are also counting on the relevant legislative initiatives of the lawmakers. I am confident that together we will be able to complete the necessary work and shortly strengthen Ukraine's energy independence," Denys Shmyhal stressed.
The Head of Government emphasized that this year Ukraine has done a lot of work to develop the natural gas market.
"We have record-breaking volumes of gas storages, we have made a breakthrough step by setting market gas prices for the population. Now suppliers are competing for household consumers. You can already fix the price of gas and pay it in equal installments throughout the year. At the same time, we have the lowest gas price for the last five years," the PM underscored.
