Completion of the construction of the 750 kV overhead transmission line of Zaporizhzhya NPP - Kakhovska substation - is one of the strategic tasks to ensure Ukraine's energy security.
This was emphasized by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal during the grand opening of the facility as part of a working trip to Kherson region on December 24.
Matteo Patrone, the Managing Director for Eastern Europe and the Caucasus at the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, and Jean-Eric de Zagon, Head of the European Investment Bank Resident Representation for Ukraine, also took part in the opening in an online format.
The Prime Minister noted that the commissioning of the overhead line creates an opportunity to release the closed capacity of nuclear generation. This means that the Zaporizhzhya nuclear power plant will be able to supply more electricity, which is an extremely important step in the implementation of Ukraine's Energy Strategy until 2035.
"Completion of the line has eliminated the last restrictions on the maximum capacity of our nuclear power plants, namely - for the Zaporizhia NPP," said Denys Shmyhal.
The Prime Minister also noted that the completion of the Kakhovska substation of Zaporizhia NPP is one of the steps to fulfill the global strategic task, which is to increase opportunities for Ukrainian electricity exports to EU countries.
In particular, according to him, the line is the first element of the future transit corridor consisting of 750 kV Kakhovka - Primorska and 400 kV - Isakcha lines, which will allow to significantly expand the capacity for Ukrainian electricity exports to Romania after synchronization of Ukraine's integrated energy system with ENTSO-E. The additional volume for export will be up to 1,000 MW, which is equal to the capacity of one large power unit of a nuclear power plant.
"Therefore, the construction of the line is an important step for the development of Ukraine's energy potential," said the Prime Minister.
In conclusion, Denys Shmyhal thanked the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank for financing the construction of the ZNPP line - Kakhovska, 750 kV substation "Kakhovska", as well as other components of this project.
In November 2020, the transmission system operator NPC Ukrenergo completed the construction of a 750 kV overhead line of ZNPP - Kakhovska with a new 750 kV substation "Kakhovska" and lines of 330 kV Kakhovska-Ostrovska and Kakhovska-Khersonska. The line is put into operation. The total cost of the project (construction of the line, substation and activities) is € 195 million. The construction was financed by loans from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European Investment Bank.
