The participants laid flowers at the foot of the monument to Mykhailo Hrushevsky and honored the memory of the statesman, under the leadership of whom the Ukrainian Central Rada declared the UPR "an independent, free sovereign state of the Ukrainian people" on January 22, 1918.
"The proclamation of the Fourth Universal in 1918 and the Act of Unification in 1919 became the fundamental events for the formation of an independent, united Ukraine. Ukrainians have demonstrated a vivid example of democratic unification and proved that national unity is the driving force behind successful resistance to an external aggressor," stressed Denys Shmyhal.
