Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and the delegation of U.S. senators Jeanne Shaheen, Robert Portman and Chris Murphy discussed issues pertaining to security sector and cooperation in the energy sector.
Denys Shmyhal thanked the U.S. senators for important visit to Ukraine and for the personal contribution to supporting Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The parties touched upon issues of strengthening cooperation in the field of security amid escalating situation on the part of the Russian Federation near the Ukrainian borders and in the temporarily occupied territories of Ukraine.
"The United States is an important partner of Ukraine in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. We praise the support of Ukraine in counteracting Russia's armed aggression," the Prime Minister said.
Denys Shmyhal added that sanctions against Nord Stream 2 are currently the only effective tool to deter Russian aggression and further encroachment by Russia into the borders of the European Union.
"I urge to use all available instruments to prevent the lifting of sanctions on the construction of Nord Stream 2. Completion of this project threatens the security not only of Ukraine, but of the whole of Europe," Denys Shmyhal noted.
The Prime Minister placed a special emphasis on the importance of developing naval bases in the Azov-Black Sea region within the Ukrainian-American partnership in order to be able to effectively combat threats.
The Head of Government stressed that Ukraine is exerting every effort to implement the best world standards necessary for the country's European and Euro-Atlantic integration. Denys Shmyhal thanked the senators for their personal contribution to the adoption by the US Senate of legislative initiatives aimed at strengthening Ukraine's defense capabilities.
Apart from that, the Prime Minister and the US Congress delegation discussed cooperation in the energy sector. Denys Shmyhal expressed gratitude for the US signal to support Ukraine in gas production and also invited American partners to join projects for exploration and further development of gas fields in Ukraine.
