Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, posted 02 June 2021 17:45

Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine Dmytro Kuleba held talks with a bipartisan delegation of the U.S. Congress - Senators Jeanne Shaheen, Robert Portman and Christopher Murphy during their working visit to Ukraine.

The Minister expressed high appreciation of the Senators' personal contribution to strengthening a long-standing bipartisan and bicameral support of Ukraine in the U.S. Congress and offered gratitude for initiating a number of acts of legislation to strengthen Ukraine's defense capabilities and promote important reforms.

Head of the U.S. delegation, Senator Jeanne Shahin, assured of the Congress' readiness to continue supporting Ukraine in countering Russia's aggression and implementing democratic transformations, which strengthen the durability of the Ukrainian state and help further Euro-Atlantic integration of our nation.

The Ukrainian Foreign Minister paid special attention to the security challenges of Russia's geopolitical project "Nord Stream 2" and stressed the need to make every effort to prevent its implementation.

"This is a bad project for Ukraine, for Europe and for the United States. It possesses not only economic, but also security and political threat to our nation. By implementing this project, Russia seeks to discredit the West in the eyes of Ukrainians in and outside of Ukraine. Impeding these plans is our common interest," he said.

Minister Kuleba stressed the importance of NATO providing Ukraine with a clear prospect for Euro-Atlantic integration, given the security challenges in the region.

Dmytro Kuleba informed the Senators about the actual security situation around Ukraine's borders and in the temporarily occupied territories of our state. He also assured of the Ukrainian authorities' commitment to ensure the independence of anti-corruption bodies, strengthening the rule of law and continuing important reforms.

The parties paid special attention to strengthening political and security cooperation between Ukraine and the United States, as well as strengthening the defense capabilities of our state.
