After September 1, Government to extend accommodation payments for IDPs in need of support
Despite the challenging situation, the Government continues to systematically support those in need. A part of the support provided by the Government to internally displaced persons is the accommodation allowance. This assistance is paid monthly for each family member of an IDP from vulnerable categories of Ukrainians. Currently, more than 1.2 million Ukrainians who were forced to leave their homes due to the war are receiving this assistance.
In August 2024, the term of payment of the accommodation allowance for a significant number of IDPs from vulnerable categories expired. These internally displaced persons have been receiving the payment since at least July 2023, and most of them have been receiving it for a year and a half or two years. That is, the State has been financially supporting these families for a long time to help them rebuild their lives in new communities (some families have been receiving living allowances since their introduction, i.e. for three years).
However, in order to continue supporting IDPs in the most difficult life circumstances, the Government will extend these payments for another 6 months, i.e. until February 2025. The relevant Government resolution, developed by the Ministry of Social Policy, was adopted today at a Cabinet of Ministers meeting.
Therefore, for those IDPs whose accommodation allowance payments were due to expire in August 2024, the payments will be extended.
Please also note that the payments will be extended automatically, and there is no need to apply for them.
At the same time, in order to verify that these families continue to comply with the provisions of the current resolution (or the procedure for receiving payments), the State, through the Social Protection Department, will check within a month whether the financial and property status of these families has not changed significantly.
If there are no changes, the families will continue to receive payments until February 2025.
Please note that the eligibility criteria have not changed: they remain the same as they were when benefits were reassigned to families who applied since March 2024.
However, if a person has not been automatically renewed for technical reasons, but is eligible, he/she should contact the social protection authority/centre for social services.
