On 16 January, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal met in Kyiv with Tom Fletcher, UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, and Filippo Grandi, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The parties discussed the implementation of the UN Humanitarian Needs and Response Plan 2025, which aims to raise more than USD 2.6 billion to help Ukrainians.

Participants also discussed existing and new assistance programmes. In particular, Denys Shmyhal highlighted priority projects such as the provision of drinking water to communities in southern Ukraine, demining, alternative heat and energy sources, housing reconstruction and shelter construction, and SME development programmes.

“We expect all assistance programmes for Ukrainians to continue, and we are also counting on the UN’s significant contribution to humanitarian demining in Ukraine this year, particularly through the launch of new programmes and projects,” the Prime Minister said.

Denys Shmyhal expressed his gratitude for the humanitarian programmes to assist internally displaced persons and help Ukrainians survive the winter, which are being implemented jointly with the Government of Ukraine. The UN has allocated USD 492 million for this heating season.

“The partnership between Ukraine and the UN and UNHCR continues to grow. Thank you for your support and assistance to Ukrainians affected by the war,” said the Prime Minister.

In 2024, 8.5 million Ukrainians received various types of assistance from the UN.
