  • Oleksii Chernyshov: Coal regions need a comprehensive transformation program

    On October 8, the Prime Minister of Ukraine chaired the first meeting of the Coordination Center for the Transformation of Coal Regions. The event was attended by the Minister for Communities and Territories Development Oleksii Chernyshov, acting Minister of Energy Olha Buslavets, representatives of ministries, other central executive bodies, people's deputies, heads of regional state administrations.

    The participants of the meeting considered the creation of the Concept of Reforming the Coal Industry and Coal Regions of Ukraine and the National Program for Transformation of Coal Regions until 2027, discussed the prospects of energy partnership between Ukraine and Germany in the context of the transformation of coal regions of Ukraine.

    "Coal regions need a comprehensive transformation program. The concept of the National Program presented today is based on the economic needs of Ukraine in the energy sector, provides for the development of coal regions and meets the international obligations of our state," Oleksii Chernyshov stressed.

    Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal stressed that the reform of the coal industry has been identified by the President of Ukraine as one of the priority tasks. According to the Head of Government, it is time now to develop appropriate concepts, strategies and launch pilot projects to trigger the development of this industry, because many coal companies are running out of resources. "International partners are ready to support our aspirations and initiatives in the fair transformation of coal regions," the Prime Minister said.

    At the meeting of the Coordination Center, Minister Oleksii Chernyshov presented the vision of the National Program for the Transformation of Coal Regions of Ukraine until 2027. The concept contains key principles and components of regional transformation, as well as ways to stimulate investment in coal-mining areas.

    Acting Minister of Energy Olha Buslavets also presented the Concept of Reforming the Coal Industry and the Government's Priority Action Plan in the coal industry. It outlines the main problems of the coal industry and suggests possible ways to solve them.
