On June 7, 2023, Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Oksen Lisovyi held an online meeting with Federal Minister of Education and Research of Germany Bettina Stark-Watzinger.
During the meeting, Oksen Lisovyi thanked Ms. Stark-Watzinger for initiating the meeting and the opportunity to meet in person to discuss topical issues of bilateral cooperation, taking into account the challenges posed by russia's full-scale war against Ukraine.
Oksen Lisovyi expressed his gratitude for the support of Ukrainian temporarily displaced children in Germany. More than 200,000 Ukrainian children are currently studying there. Some of them also continue their distance learning in Ukrainian educational institutions. At the same time, Saturday schools are operating in various German cities.
"We expect that when the security situation allows, Ukrainian children will return home. Therefore, it is extremely important for us to create conditions for them abroad to continue studying the Ukrainian language, literature, history, as well as learning in the Ukrainian language," the Minister said.
Oksen Lisovyi noted that it would be important to maintain constant communication at the level of the joint working group of representatives of both ministries established in 2022. During the online meeting, the parties addressed practical issues of organising the educational process for pupils and students who are internally displaced in Germany, including ensuring the continuity of education for Ukrainian students, synchronising school and vocational education for temporarily displaced persons, and supporting children living in families abroad who study in Germany and continue to receive Ukrainian education.
The ministers also stressed the importance of continuing and developing bilateral scientific and technological cooperation, which had been going on for 30 years and had been filled with joint events and the implementation of research projects, programmes and initiatives.
