Ministry of Health updates state register of medicinal products
The Ministry of Health of Ukraine has launched an updated version of the State Register of Medicinal Products. The updated register includes data on nearly 16,500 medicinal products, which were analysed and cleaned before migration.
The register contains information on medicinal products and pharmaceutical ingredients and enables data exchange with other systems. It is a key tool used by relevant authorities, such as the Ministry of Health, the State Expert Centre, and the State Service of Ukraine on Medicines and Drugs Control, while also being accessible to the public. As such, it plays a critical role in ensuring safety and quality control in the circulation of medicinal products in Ukraine.
The update aligns the register with EU requirements for healthcare information systems and lays the groundwork for mutual international recognition of electronic prescriptions.
The Ministry of Health developed the new register functionality and migrated the data with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Ukraine, under the projects “Enhancing Crisis Management and Emergency Response capacities at all levels of government authorities of Ukraine” and “Diia Support Project,” funded by the governments of Germany and Sweden.
The analysis, cleaning, and migration of data to the new version were necessary due to significant technological differences between the two systems.
“Ensuring transparency and efficiency in the circulation of medicinal products in Ukraine is a key priority. The launch of the updated version of the medicinal products register is an important step in this direction,” said Deputy Minister of Health for Digital Development Mariia Karchevych.
Previously, UNDP, with support from partners, assisted the Ministry of Health in implementing two other information systems related to medical devices. The modernisation of these registers will enhance the efficiency of managing the circulation of medicinal products and medical devices in Ukraine.
Christophoros Politis, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP in Ukraine, stated that digital transformation in healthcare was essential for creating more robust and adaptable systems. He noted that the modernised register demonstrated their commitment to supporting Ukraine’s healthcare sector with solutions that improved transparency and efficiency, ultimately leading to better healthcare outcomes for citizens throughout the country.
