International Digital Diplomacy: Ukraine becomes a partner of NIIS

Ukraine has become a partner of the Nordic Institute for Interoperability Solutions (NIIS), which includes Finland, Estonia, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. The new partnership will enable the exchange of experience and joint efforts to help other countries digitalise.

NIIS implements the X-Road technology. In particular, it coordinates, develops and tests the X-Road source code. The Nordic Institute for Interoperability Solutions is responsible for documentation and technical requirements, participates in international cooperation, and provides certifications and training for third parties.

"NIIS plays an important role in driving innovation in digital government and facilitating cross-border cooperation. We are delighted to have the opportunity to work with NIIS to shape a progressive future together. This is an honour for our team, as we in Ukraine have direct experience in introducing X-Road (Trembita)," said Valeriia Ionan, Deputy Minister of Digital Transformation of Ukraine for European Integration.

For Ukraine, this is a consistent step in the field of interstate digital diplomacy and the study of the world's best practices. The Government has recently adopted a resolution on the Open Source Diia. Now, developers from other countries can use it and create their own applications based on it.

"This partnership demonstrates the commitment of NIIS members and Ukraine to improving the digital public infrastructure and underlines the increasing importance of international cooperation in this area. As digital challenges transcend national borders, partnerships like this are crucial to building sustainable and interconnected digital societies," says Ville Sirviö, NIIS CEO.

The partnership with NIIS will facilitate the development of joint digital solutions. Representatives of the Ministry of Digital Transformation will join the technical working group. They will take part in discussions on future developments of the X-Road or individual components of the digital government infrastructure.
