Ministry of Energy: Norway to provide NOK 100 million for restoration of Chornobyl NPP

Norway has announced an additional contribution of NOK 100 million (approximately USD 10 million) for the restoration of the New Safe Confinement at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant, which was damaged as a result of a russian drone attack.

The funds will be channelled through the International Chornobyl Cooperation Account (ICCA), administered by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The financing will enable the restoration of safety systems at the Chornobyl NPP following the russian drone attack in February 2025, which damaged the New Safe Confinement over the destroyed fourth reactor unit.

“Norway remains one of Ukraine’s most reliable partners in strengthening the resilience of our energy sector and overcoming the consequences of russian attacks. We have built a strong partnership within the Ukraine Energy Support Fund, and Norwegian assistance and equipment supplies continue to help our energy workers restore infrastructure damaged by russian strikes,” noted the First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal.

It should be recalled that at the end of April this year, the United States announced the allocation of USD 100 million for the repair of the Chornobyl NPP confinement. Additionally, during the Chornobyl International Conference on Nuclear Safety and Recovery, an agreement was signed with the EBRD for EUR 30 million for the first stage of confinement restoration, and partners took on initial commitments totalling nearly EUR 100 million.
