After the destruction of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant dam organised by the russian occupiers, the flooding of the first four settlements of the left-bank Kherson region, which took the biggest hit after the dam burst, was analysed.
As of 14 June, almost 19,000 buildings and structures were found to be flooded at various levels in the settlements of Korsunka, Kozachi Lageri, Nova Kakhovka and Rayske. These data are presented in a report prepared as part of a joint project by UNDP, KSE Institute, Vox Ukraine with the support of the European Union and in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and the Ministry for Communities, Territories and Infrastructure Development.
In total, 18,968 buildings were analysed and various levels of flood risk were identified according to the following parameters:
Possibly flooded: 7,206 buildings were identified
Completely flooded: 9,573 buildings were identified
Partially flooded: flooding was recorded in 2,189 buildings
The analysis is based on UNITAR satellite imagery, open sources, including elevation data from NASA DEM, etc. This data will allow not only to have an independent analysis of the damage caused by russia, but also to plan the restoration of the affected areas quickly and efficiently.
"Unfortunately, residential buildings have suffered the most, accounting for 57% of all properties. russia's unprecedented crime has caused not only the threat of an environmental disaster. The occupiers intended to cause economic damage, slow down the de-occupation of the territories and inflict as many losses on Ukraine as possible. We currently have interim results of the study, which will be ongoing. However, we must take into account that the scale of the disaster may increase, as we are dealing with a terrorist state that continues to commit crimes against Ukraine. Thanks to this study, the Government will have an important information resource that will help mobilise additional resources and counteract russia," commented Yuliia Svyrydenko, First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and Minister of Economy of Ukraine.
