  • Ministry of Justice leadership met with Head of Council of Europe Office in Ukraine

    Minister of Justice of Ukraine Denys Maliuska, Deputy Minister of Justice of Ukraine for European Integration Liudmyla Suhak and Commissioner for the European Court of Human Rights Margarita Sokorenko met with the Head of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine Maciej Janczak and the project managers of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine.

    The meeting was organised to discuss the status of implementation of existing EU and Council of Europe projects, including the challenges and needs related to the implementation of such projects within the framework of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine. In particular, the parties stressed the importance of implementing the project "European Union and Council of Europe working together to support the Prison Reform in Ukraine Plus" (SPERU+ Project). The aim of the project is to further revise the existing and introduce new principles of modern penitentiary management in accordance with the standards and best practices of the Council of Europe, including the elimination of shortcomings identified in the judgments of the ECHR against Ukraine.

    It was noted that in the context of the unprecedented full-scale invasion launched by Russia, the Ministry of Justice continued to work actively to represent Ukraine before the ECHR in cases of violations of the Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms, to coordinate the implementation of its judgments and to inform the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe on the progress of the implementation of such judgments.

    The leadership of the Ministry of Justice expressed gratitude to the representatives of the CoE Office in Ukraine for all the efforts made by the Council of Europe. They also noted the constant support of partners in the process of implementing reforms in Ukraine in the face of full-scale armed aggression by russia. The representatives of the Council of Europe Office in Ukraine thanked the Ukrainian side for its openness to cooperation and expressed their readiness to continue providing assistance in international cooperation and promoting professional cooperation.
