December 7, 2018, during the official visit of the President of the Republic of Lithuania Dalia Grybauskaitė to Kyiv, the Head of the State Migration Service of Ukraine (SMSU) Maxym Sokoliuk signed a Protocol between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Lithuania on the implementation of the Agreement between Ukraine and the EU on the readmission of persons. On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Lithuania, this international treaty was signed by the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius.
By signing this bilateral document, the SMSU, as a central competent authority of Ukraine in the field of migration, has successfully completed the negotiation process with the Lithuanian side begun back in 2016 and will further maintain effective international cooperation with the EU countries in the field of readmission of persons.
The implementation of the aforementioned international agreement shall positively influence the development of good-neighborly relations between Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania, determine, on the basis of reciprocity, fast and effective procedures for the identification and safe and organized return of persons who do not comply with the rules of entry, departure and stay in the territories of Ukraine and the Republic of Lithuania, ensure that Ukraine complies with its obligations to the European Community and the global community for the introduction of effective levers of the implementation of the state policy in the field of readmission of persons.
Along with similar international documents concluded between the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Governments of Austria, the Czech Republic, Estonia, and Poland, this Ukrainian-Lithuanian international treaty is the fifth Implementing Protocol to the EU-Ukraine Readmission Agreement.
