Representatives of the State Fisheries Agency took part in the 25th session of the Governing Council of the International Organisation for the Development of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Europe (Eurofish), held at Eurofish headquarters in Copenhagen, Denmark. In addition to member countries of Eurofish, the event was attended by representatives from a further 12 states and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During the session, all Eurofish member countries expressed unwavering support for the people of Ukraine in their fight for territorial integrity and independence. They also unanimously endorsed Ukraine’s proposal to acquire membership in Eurofish, with exemption from membership fees for a period of five years. Furthermore, confirmation was given for an invitation to Ukrainian specialists to visit Germany to study successful EU practices in the fisheries sector, as well as to participate in educational and other events organised by Eurofish.

As part of the event, participants also discussed the specifics of aquaculture practices in various countries, enabling an exchange of experience and best practices. At the same time, it was announced that Portugal and Montenegro will join Eurofish as members this year.

The day before the session, the Deputy Head of the State Fisheries Agency for Digital Development, Digital Transformation and Digitalisation, Serhii Dekhtiarenko, held a constructive meeting with Eurofish Director Marco Frederiksen. They discussed prospects for further cooperation, the particularities of operating domestic aquaculture businesses, and details surrounding Ukraine’s acquisition of membership in Eurofish.

The decisions taken in Copenhagen represent an important step towards integrating Ukraine’s fisheries sector into the European space and open up new opportunities for the industry’s development.
