Denys Shmyhal discusses cooperation and further support for Ukraine’s energy sector with Japanese Ambassador Masashi Nakagome
First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine – Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal held a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine Masashi Nakagome.
The Minister of Energy thanked the Ambassador for Japan’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, as well as for the significant practical assistance provided to Ukraine, including to its energy sector.
Through the Ministry of Energy’s emergency energy assistance hubs alone, Ukraine has received more than 113 tonnes of humanitarian assistance, including 259 backup power generators. Under various support programmes, partners have also provided two gas turbines and mobile substations, 181 generators, 118 transformers, 6,400 gabions and other essential equipment.
“We look forward to further cooperation as we prepare for the 2026–2027 autumn-winter period, as russia continues to carry out targeted strikes against our energy and gas infrastructure,” Denys Shmyhal noted.
The parties discussed the need to accelerate the procurement, with the support of the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), of 62 power transformers for Ukraine’s frontline regions. One of these transformers has already been delivered to the Kherson region, while another 27 have been delivered to the Mykolaiv region.
Together with Japanese partners, work is also underway to procure specialised equipment for gas production. In addition, Ukraine is interested in exploring opportunities for cooperation on the reconstruction and modernisation of thermal power plants and combined heat and power plants during 2027–2030.
“We highly value Japan’s support and our partners’ readiness to continue cooperation aimed at strengthening Ukraine’s energy resilience. I am grateful to Ambassador Masashi Nakagome for his significant contribution to the development of the partnership between our countries,” Denys Shmyhal concluded.
