Prime Minister of Ukraine Denys Shmyhal and Prime Minister of Canada Justin Trudeau discussed the practical implementation of the updated Free Trade Agreement during a meeting in Toronto, Canada. The meeting was attended by the Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, Minister of Foreign Affairs Mélanie Joly and Minister of Defense Anita Anand.
"We thank Canada for its unwavering support since the beginning of russia's full-scale invasion. Canada has always been among the first to take steps to support our country: politically, militarily, financially, and through sanctions. It was also the first to adopt legislation to confiscate russian assets. We appreciate your solidarity," said Denys Shmyhal.
In particular, the Prime Minister of Ukraine thanked Canada for preparing to implement legislation on the confiscation of frozen russian assets. He emphasized that the confiscation mechanism should become the basis of the future security system, so that every potential aggressor understood that he would pay for his unprovoked criminal actions.
The parties also tackled countering hybrid threats posed by russia, cooperation in cybersecurity, and coordinated military and financial support for Ukraine. The Head of the Ukrainian Government expressed gratitude for the CAD 2.4 billion of financial assistance that had been transferred to the budget previous month, which, according to Denys Shmyhal, had become a significant contribution to Ukraine's macro-financial stability and support for Ukrainians.
