Farmers have sown more than 2.6 million hectares of spring grain and leguminous crops


As of 5 May, agricultural enterprises of all categories have sown more than two-fifths of the planned area for grain and leguminous crops. The highest sowing rates are being shown by farms in the central and southern regions.

In total, 2,609,000 hectares have been sown, which is 43% of the forecast for grain and leguminous crops. Of which:

  • Spring wheat – 177,900 hectares
  • Spring barley – 687,300 hectares
  • Peas – 252,600 hectares
  • Oats – 135,400 hectares
  • Corn – 1,346,700 hectares
  • Millet – 5,200 hectares

In addition, farmers in Sumy and Kharkiv regions have begun sowing buckwheat – 640 hectares have been sown.

Leading regions:

  • Poltava region – 294,300 hectares (wheat – 4,900 hectares, barley – 65,100 hectares, peas – 12,100 hectares, oats – 1,900 hectares, corn – 210,300 hectares)
  • Odesa region – 193,400 hectares (wheat – 10,000 hectares, barley – 35,000 hectares, peas – 95,000 hectares, oats – 1,200 hectares, corn – 22,300 hectares, millet – 400 hectares)
  • Kyiv region – 183,800 hectares (wheat – 25,600 hectares, barley – 39,000 hectares, peas – 5,500 hectares, oats – 6,000 hectares, corn – 107,000 hectares, millet – 600 hectares)

Sowing of technical crops is also underway. In total, 2,066,800 hectares have been sown. This includes:

  • Sugar beet – 182,900 hectares (93% of the forecast)
  • Sunflower – 1,506,800 hectares (30%)
  • Soybeans – 377,100 hectares (18%)
