Arseniy Yatsenyuk met EU Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides

On Friday, March 18, Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk met the European Commissioner for Humanitarian Aid and Crisis Management Christos Stylianides.

The Head of Ukrainian Government expressed his gratitude for providing by the European Commission a new package of humanitarian aid worth EUR 20 million to support Ukrainian citizens, who had suffered from hostilities in the East of Ukraine, and highly appreciated the personal contribution of Christos Stylianides.

"We feel the support of the European Commission for the Ukrainian people in helping to solve the security and humanitarian challenges we face: Russia waged its aggression against Ukraine; Crimea, Donetsk and Luhansk still remain in temporary occupation", Yatsenyuk stressed, reminding that Ukraine enumerates over a million displaced people.

The European Commissioner assured of the EU solidarity with the Ukrainian people. Despite the fact that the agenda of the European Union still contains a number of serious threats posed by the conflict in Syria and the refugee crisis, assistance to Ukraine still remains a priority, the European Commissioner reassured.

These days when there have almost passed two years since the annexation of Crimea, Christos Stylianides stressed that this international problem is still in the agenda of the European Commission and it demonstrates a strong position of non-recognition of the illegal annexation of Crimea considering it a violation of international law and supports the resolution of the UN General Assembly on this issue.

Along with the new funding in the amount of € 20 million the total humanitarian assistance provided by the European Commission to support those in need in the Eastern Ukraine has exceeded € 63 million. Together with direct funding obtained from the EU member countries since the beginning of 2014 the amount of assistance allocated by the European Union to help the victims of the conflict makes up over € 146 million.
