  • PM says any attempts by Russia to hold illegal elections in areas of Donetsk and Luhansk regions mean full disruption of Minsk agreements

Ukraine has fulfilled its part of the Minsk agreements: "Any discussions on shifting responsibility on Ukraine are groundless and unacceptable. Ukraine is a victim. The Russian Federation is an aggressor," Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk stated following a meeting with Polish Prime Minister Ewa Kopacz Poland in Warsaw.

He recalled the key provisions of the Minsk agreements. Clause 1, the Head of Ukraine’s Government stressed, is a ceasefire, "This hasn’t happened. Yes, it happens sometimes that the number of attacks significantly reduces, but then it is back there again."

"Clause 2 is the withdrawal of Russian gunmen and terrorists from the territory of Ukraine. I emphasize - not only the pull-out of equipment or weapons, but the withdrawal of regular Russian troops and Russian gangsters from the Ukrainian territory. Clause 3 is reinstatement of control of the Ukrainian state border in order to prevent these bandits from returning back," he stressed.

Arseniy Yatsenyuk also underlined that elections in Ukraine, in general "and on the Ukrainian territory, which includes Donetsk, Luhansk and Crimea," must be held solely in keeping with international standards and OSCE criteria - transparent and fair elections.

"We appealed to the OSCE and the ODIHR (Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights - ed.) to give us an answer whether there are conditions today for conducting fair and transparent elections. How can you go to the polling station and drop your vote at Russian gunpoint? It is a fiction," said the Prime Minister of Ukraine.

"Any attempts by the Russian Federation - because Russian mercenaries operate in Donetsk and Luhansk - to hold any illegal elections in these territories will mean the complete and total disruption of the Minsk agreements," Arseniy Yatsenyuk pointed out.

The Prime Minister of Ukraine noted the position of Poland "to support Ukraine regarding the unity of the European Union and the United States of America on the issue of sanctions against the Russian Federation": "We, together with the civilized world require to stick to "the Minsk deal"- to stop shooting and killing Ukrainians, to withdraw Russian troops and reinstate control over the border. Then this crisis, which was created by Russia, and this military aggression will stop."

Arseniy Yatsenyuk also highlighted that Russia was interested in destabilizing the situation in the whole world. "The consequences of destabilization are known not only to Ukraine but now also to Europe. We understand you better than anyone else, when now hundreds of thousands of migrants from military conflict zones are seeking asylum in European Union’s member-states. Because due to the Russian military aggression we have over 1.5 million of IDPs whom should be given jobs, wages, pensions and housing."

"This means that we must seek the answer to these challenges together," the Prime Minister of Ukraine said.
