Poland to grant EUR 100 million to Ukraine for the construction of border infrastructure and checkpoints on the Ukrainian-Polish frontier
During a visit in
Warsaw the Governmental delegation of Ukraine has signed an intergovernmental
agreement according to which Poland provides
a tied government loan to Ukraine
of EUR
100 million, which, in
particular, envisages funds to finance projects designed to develop border
infrastructure and equip border checkpoints at the Ukrainian-Polish frontier.
The deal between the
Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Government of the Republic of Poland was
signed by Minister of Finance of Ukraine Natalia Jaresko
and Minister of Finance of Poland Mateusz Szczurek in the presence of Prime Ministers of Ukraine
and Poland.
Following his meeting
with Prime Minister of Poland Ewa Kopacz,
Prime Minister of Ukraine Arseniy Yatsenyuk announced that this deal is a significant
step to support Ukraine.
According to the Head
of Ukraine’s Government, the document contains that the loan facility is
granted to Ukraine for 30 years at 0.15 % interest.
The Prime Minister of
Ukraine explained the funds are to be spent to construct 8 checkpoints along
the longest eastern border of the European Union: "In general, this will affect
8 million citizens on both sides. The traffic on these checkpoints equals 50
thousand people, 15 thousand passenger cars and 2 thousand trucks daily".
"60% of the money
will be directed to construct roads at these checkpoints, 40% of the sum will
go to develop infrastructure", explained the Head of Government.
Arseniy Yatsenyuk added
that the Polish business demonstrated readiness to engage in the construction
of the Ukrainian checkpoints.
