Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs of Ukraine A. Deshchytsia received Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations Jan Eliasson.

Jan Eliasson is visiting Ukraine at the request of the UN Secretary-General in order to get first-hand information about the situation in our country.

The sides were unanimous as to the necessity of the unconditional respect of the fundamental norms and principles of the UN Charter, primarily as regards peaceful settlement of conflicts. They stressed the priority task of safeguarding of the state sovereignty, territorial integrity and independence of Ukraine. “Calm, international solidarity and peace – these are the three key messages of Ukraine”, Andrii Deshchytsia emphasized.

The possible ways of involving of the UN potential in de-escalation of the situation in the Autonomous Republic of Crimea (ARC), in particular through assistance in ensuring of the international monitoring presence in the ARC, were discussed. It was agreed to consider the issue of the visit to Crimea of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy Robert H.Serry, who is visiting Ukraine together with Jan Eliasson.
