MFA issues statement

“The acute socio-political crisis accompanied by the violence on the part of the authorities demanded to perform fast and effective activities to overcome it. It was contained in the Agreement on settlement the crisis in Ukraine, signed on February 21, 2014. Together with that, factual withdrawal of the former leaders of the country from fulfillment of the liabilities has created barriers to the proper realization of the achieved understandings,” the statement reads.

“Meanwhile, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine as the sole legislative body and legitimate institute of power has assumed responsibility to normalize the situation in the country, approved a decision to ensure implementation of the largest part of the provisions of the mentioned Agreement. In particular, a decision on return to the Constitution of 2004 was taken, pre-term presidential elections were slated to be held on May 25, 2014, the process of forming of the government of national unity is in process. The key decisions by the Verkhovna Rada directed to normalization of the situation were adopted by the constitutional majority of the Parliament’s members, represented by all the political forces,” the document says.  

The legitimacy of the decisions approved by the Verkhovna Rada has already received recognition among the largest part of international partners of our country.  

Public peace and order were restored in Kyiv and other cities now. Basing on principles of openness and tolerance the law enforcement bodies have maintained effective interaction with the representatives of local communities. The priority attention is paid to the interests of citizens of Ukraine from all the regions, preventing violation of their legal rights and targeting to restore the national unity.

Hence, all necessary measures are being taken to lead the country out of the current crisis and stabilize the situation within the society.

Moreover, the statement reads: “We reaffirm our commitment to Ukrainian-Russian relations based upon the new equality and neighbourly principles, which was peculiarly emphasized in the address to the Ukrainian people by the acting President of Ukraine, the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Speaker O. V. Turchynov. After the new Government of Ukraine is formed the Ukrainian party will be ready to resume an overall bilateral dialog in the framework of institutions of Ukrainian-Russian interstate commission.
