MFA: Ukrainian Government is configured to exert maximum efforts for the peaceful settlement of the situation

Due to recent events in the center of Kyiv, to which attracted high attention of the international community, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine is authorized to state the following.

Mass meetings of a political nature had been continued in Kiev on January 19, 2014 and law enforcement agencies of Ukraine did not create any hindrances.

However, part of the radical people resorted to illegal acts that required the response of law enforcement agencies. These illegal actions occurred despite numerous calls for their cessation, including from some members of the opposition.

As a result of clashes, dozens of people were injured, including a significant number of militia officers.

In order to stop the violence and resolve the situation, President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych instructed the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Andriy Klyuyev to create an appropriate working group with representatives of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine and the Presidential Administration of Ukraine.

The Government of Ukraine is configured to exert maximum efforts for the peaceful settlement of the situation through the dialogue, and it hopes on the conviction by the international community of radical actions that trigger clashes and threaten the lives and health of citizens.
