The April 26, 1986 explosion at the Chornobyl Nuclear Power Plant became one of the world’s worst nuclear accidents in the history and one of the worst tragedies of Ukraine in the twentieth century. The Chernobyl accident has become a symbol of irresponsible attitude to the scientific and technological progress and criminal disregard of safety rules.
The consequences of the catastrophe could have been even more terrible and devastating, if not the heroic feat of hundreds of thousands of liquidators who were fighting to mitigate the consequences of the explosion. Their courage and sacrifice helped saving thousands of lives. Ukraine will never forget their feat and will always treat them the heroes living among us.
