Yulia Svyrydenko discusses the role of communities on Ukraine’s path to the EU with the President of the European Committee of the Regions

Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko met with President of the European Committee of the Regions Kata Tüttő during her first visit to Ukraine.

“I had the honour of presenting President Tüttő with the Order of Princess Olga, awarded by decree of the President of Ukraine, in recognition of her personal contribution to supporting Ukraine’s fight for freedom and strengthening Ukraine–EU relations,” Yulia Svyrydenko said.

The parties held a meaningful discussion on the role of regions and communities along Ukraine’s path towards the European Union. European integration takes place not only in capitals, but also directly on the ground – in cities, towns and communities. Regions must be part of this dialogue and understand both the opportunities and responsibilities that come with EU membership.

The European Committee of the Regions plays a key role in engaging municipalities and communities in EU cooperation networks and experience-sharing programmes.

“We deeply value the work of the European Alliance of Cities and Regions for the Reconstruction of Ukraine. Its support for Ukraine’s recovery, partnerships between local and regional authorities, decentralisation, and EU integration helps ensure that Ukraine’s priorities are heard and reflected in European policy,” the Prime Minister said.

President Tüttő noted that Ukraine is a fully functioning and resilient state that continues to live, operate and successfully overcome the immense challenges posed by russia’s full-scale invasion.
