On the occasion of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, a solemn meeting of the Parliament was held in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. The event gathered together the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the President of the Republic of Lithuania Gitanas Nausėda, the President of the European Parliament Roberta Metsola, members of the Government, military personnel and other dignitaries.

On the day of the first official celebration of the Day of Ukrainian Statehood, the Government registered the Draft Law on Amendments to the Laws of Ukraine "On Citizenship of Ukraine" and "On Ensuring the Functioning of the Ukrainian Language as the State Language" regarding the conditions for admission to Ukrainian citizenship. This was announced by Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

"Today, Ukraine officially marks the Day of Ukrainian Statehood for the first time. It is symbolic that we count down our statehood from the year of the foundation of Kyiv, the center of ancient Ukrainian historical lands. And it is symbolic that today our Government has submitted to the Verkhovna Rada a draft law on the conditions for acquiring Ukrainian citizenship," commented Denys Shmyhal.

The Head of the Government noted, after the law is adopted, in order to obtain Ukrainian citizenship, it will be necessary to pass a comprehensive exam on knowledge of the basics of the Constitution of Ukraine, the history of Ukraine, and the Ukrainian language. Those who will receive citizenship for outstanding services to Ukraine, or those who are serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine and have received citizenship, must pass the three relevant exams within two years when receiving it.

"Ukrainian people, with their courage and solidarity, are today writing a new history of Ukraine. A history where the feat of the Ukrainian army and all Ukrainians will forever be etched in the memory of generations as an example of a courageous and selfless struggle for freedom. And we will never allow enemies and haters neither to steal nor erase our history, nor devalue the feats of our soldiers, artists, scientists, the acts of valor of our Ukrainian state. Ukrainian citizenship is a privilege that must be earned through knowledge and respect for the fundamental principles of our country," the Prime Minister emphasized.
