The Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine has approved a draft Presidential Decree that provides for increased academic scholarships for cadets, students and adjuncts of military universities to be awarded in honor of Ukraine's defenders who died in the struggle for independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity.

This is a framework document that creates the legal basis for further development and implementation of a mechanism for awarding enhanced academic scholarships in honor of fallen Defenders of Ukraine in the military education system.

The concept proposed by the Ministry of Defense stipulates that the list of such scholarships and their number will be additionally determined by a separate government decision upon the submission of the Ministry of Defense.

The draft act also provides for the abolition of Presidential Decree No. 209 of February 11, 2000 on the establishment of scholarships named after the heroes of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945. The decree is to be abolished in accordance with the requirements of the Law “On Condemnation and Prohibition of Propaganda of Russian Imperial Policy in Ukraine and Decolonization of Place Names”.

Today, 28 scholarships named after the heroes of the Great Patriotic War of 1941-1945 are awarded in higher military educational institutions and military educational units of higher education institutions. Scholarships for cadets from among civilian youth are set at the amount of their double salary, while for cadets in contract military service, students and adjuncts, they are paid with a 100 percent increase in their salary.
