On July 4, 2018, the XVI session of the Ukrainian-Slovak Commission on transboundary water issues in the framework of the implementation of the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Slovak Republic on boundary water management took place.

During the final day of the session, the sides discussed a number of issues regarding cooperation on transboundary issues and agreed to approve a number of regulations.

In particular, with regard to the design of the construction of flood control structures and hydraulic engineering structures, which provides for the approval of work sites, technical decisions on construction and calculations of the impact on the rate of stream flows of the two countries; on the implementation of joint measures in response to floods and floating of ice; with regards to monitoring and ensuring water quality control in water flows connecting Ukraine and Slovakia.

The commissioners also agreed to search for sources of funding for projects that constitute mutual interest for the two countries and are aimed to reduce the risks of overflow and flooding of the territories.

On the outcomes of the session, Iryna Ovcharenko, the Commissioner of the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine on the implementation of the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Slovak Republic on water management and transboundary waters/Chairman of the State Agency of Water Resources of Ukraine and Vladimír Novák, Commissioner of the Government of the Slovak Republic for the implementation of the Agreement between the Government of Ukraine and the Government of the Slovak Republic on Water Management, Director-General of the Directorate for Water Protection of the Department of State Water Management and Fisheries of the Slovak Republic signed Protocol XVI meeting of the Ukrainian-Slovak Commission on transborder water objects.

The mentioned Protocol provides for further close and co-ordinated cooperation between Ukraine and the Slovak Republic in transboundary water objects in the spirit of good-neighborliness and mutual understanding.

In addition to the approved composition of the commission, representatives of the Ukrainian Embassy in Slovakia took part in the meeting.
