Ukraine and Lithuania have a common position on focal questions related to regional security and economic cooperation both at bilateral level and in the international arena. This statement was made during the talks between Prime Minister of Ukraine Volodymyr Groysman and Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius. The Foreign Minister of the Republic of Lithuania, who has visited Ukraine for 15 times, and plans to visit the eastern part of the country again in the framework of the visit.
"We praise your stance on many issues that relate, above all, to our territorial integrity. Supporting Ukraine in such a difficult time is of paramount importance", Volodymyr Groysman stressed.
He stressed that the issue of joint counteraction to aggression should be thoroughly discussed "We can talk many times about what's happening in the east of the country, but it is better to see a real situation, where we still have further aggression", the Head of Government underscored.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania, for his part, confirmed that seeing the situation with his own eyes is always better and more informative. " Now we want to express solidarity with Ukraine and its citizens. They sometimes lose faith, but they need to be supported. And this must be touched upon during our discussion in the EU and NATO. It is not easy and much depends on the processes in Ukraine. But we must remember important tasks. Someone has to implement them ", Linas Linkevičius said.
During the talks, mechanisms for attracting international assistance, first of all from the European Union in order to support reforms initiated by the Government, were touched upon.
Apart from that, the sides paid a peculiar attention to the Lithuanian initiative" The new European plan for Ukraine". Its elements should be taken into account when introducing a new instrument of the financial support for Ukraine by the European Commission.
On the outcomes of 2017, the volume of bilateral trade turnover between Ukraine and Lithuania has amounted to more than $ 1 billion dollars and increased by 38.6 % as compared with the same period in 2016. Since the beginning of Russia's aggression, the Ukrainian export to Lithuania not only did not decrease, but also significantly increased. According to the preliminary data of the State Statistics Service of Ukraine during January-May 2018, trade turnover between Ukraine and Lithuania increased by 25.4% compared to the corresponding period in 2017 and amounted to $ 416 million.
