Ukraine and UNIDO: cooperation in industrial recovery
On 27 October, Minister of Economy, Environment and Agriculture of Ukraine Oleksii Sobolev met with a delegation from the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO), led by Deputy to the Director General Yuko Yasunaga.
The parties discussed the outcomes of the Ukrainian delegation’s visit to Tokyo, as well as next steps in cooperation with the new Japanese Government and international partners. The focus was primarily on collaboration in industrial recovery.
“Industrial development is one of the Government’s main priorities and a key element of the Made in Ukraine policy. UNIDO is our largest partner among all UN agencies in industrial recovery – particularly thanks to Japan’s significant contribution,” noted Oleksii Sobolev.
Ukraine has already launched the Green Industrial Recovery Programme with support from Japan’s Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry, which provided USD 188 million in funding. In total, 13 projects with a combined budget of USD 210 million are being implemented under the UNIDO partnership, aimed at developing green industry, creating jobs, and investing in sustainable development.
Key areas for further cooperation include:
Industrial Ramstein. Discussions are underway to establish a trilateral format with Japan and UNIDO to supply Ukrainian enterprises affected by hostilities with essential equipment and technologies.
New Industrial Strategy. The Ministry of Economy, Environment and Agriculture, in collaboration with UNIDO and the World Bank, is developing a “roadmap” for industrial development, which will, among other things, outline future funding priorities.
Investments from Gulf Countries. A major conference is being prepared in Saudi Arabia, where Ukraine will present specific investment projects to partners from the Middle East.
Separately, the parties agreed to accelerate the opening of UNIDO’s Programme Office in Kyiv, which will serve as a platform for coordinating joint projects and expediting their implementation.
