Ukraine and Slovakia ink Memorandum of Understanding on archival cooperation
On May 25, 2026, during an official visit to Prešov, Slovak Republic, Anatolii Khromov, Head of the State Archives of Ukraine, signed a Memorandum of Understanding between the State Archives of Ukraine and the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic.
From the Slovak side, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed by Michal Kaliňák, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic and political scientist specialising in local government.
The signing ceremony was organized and hosted by the Embassy of Ukraine in the Slovak Republic and the Consulate General of Ukraine in Prešov.
This is the first international intergovernmental agreement on cooperation between archivists of Ukraine and Slovakia, the provisions of which provide for the exchange of specialists and the conduct of joint scientific research, including the study of archival materials, in particular, the search for archival documents on the historical past of Ukraine and the Slovak Republic in the state archives of both parties; the exchange of copies of archival documents of interest to both parties; the organization and holding of joint scientific and professional conferences, archival exhibitions, and the publication of collections (compilations) of documents; and the exchange of experience and internships for archivists from both parties.
The Slovak side has entrusted the implementation of the Memorandum of Understanding to the Public Administration Division of the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic, the Department of Archives and Registries, and the Slovak National Archives.
Following the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding, Anatolii Khromov, Head of the State Archives of Ukraine, visited the State Archives in Prešov, familiarized himself with its activities, and discussed with the archive’s leadership the organization of internships for Ukrainian archivists at the facility, as well as the establishment of cross-border cooperation with the State Archives of Ukraine (State Archives of Zakarpattia region).
