Ukraine and Romania strengthen transport links: Mykola Kalashnyk signs Memorandum on border infrastructure development

As part of the Carpathian Economic Forum, Ukraine's Minister for Recovery, Infrastructure and Transport Mykola Kalashnyk and Ionel Scrioșteanu, State Secretary at Romania's Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure, signed a Memorandum of Understanding to strengthen cooperation and ensure reliable transit of Ukrainian goods.

The memorandum is based on an updated Strategy for Cross-Border Infrastructure Development between the two countries, which takes into account new needs and challenges in ensuring the movement of freight and passengers.

The memorandum outlines further joint steps by Ukraine and Romania to develop transport routes between the two countries.

These include modernizing and developing road border crossing points and access roads, strengthening rail connections, simplifying border control procedures, and expanding opportunities for transshipping Ukrainian cargo through Romanian ports.

A separate area of cooperation is the development of joint border infrastructure. Ukraine and Romania plan to increase the capacity of existing crossing points and develop new connections. The updated joint strategy covers 17 crossing points, 10 of which are new proposals.

"The Romanian direction is extremely important for Ukrainian logistics amid the full-scale war. Our task now is to support the systematic development of the entire transport corridor — crossing points, access roads, railways, and port infrastructure. The signed Memorandum defines specific areas of this work. It is important for us to increase border capacity and create stable, predictable routes for Ukrainian business to the European Union and Romanian ports," said Mykola Kalashnyk.

The next stage will be moving forward with the infrastructure projects defined in the memorandum and securing funding for their implementation. Ukraine and Romania will continue coordinating to synchronize infrastructure development on both sides of the border, increase its capacity, and strengthen transport links between Ukraine and the European Union.
