German Galushchenko, Minister of Energy of Ukraine, met with Patrick Fragman, Chief Executive Officer of Westinghouse Electric Company, during his working visit to Washington. The main topic of the meeting was the expansion of cooperation in the field of nuclear energy.
The Energy Minister noted the effective cooperation with Westinghouse, which is and will remain a reliable partner for Ukraine both in the production of nuclear fuel and in the construction of advanced reactor technologies and power generation.
“Thanks to Westinghouse, we have been able to completely abandon russian nuclear fuel. In September this year, the first Westinghouse fuel was loaded into the VVER-440 reactor at Rivne NPP. This is the end of the russian monopoly in this segment of the nuclear fuel market, which may pave the way for rapid sanctions against rosatom,” said German Galushchenko.
For his part, Patrick Fragman noted that Westinghouse was continuing to work with the Ukrainian side to increase nuclear generating capacity. This includes the construction of new AP1000 power units and the installation of AP300 small modular reactors, the first of which could be commissioned within the next ten years.
