Ukraine presents eighth point of the Peace Formula on environmental security at COP29

At COP29, Ukraine presented the Eighth Point of the Peace Formula, focused on environmental security. The event was held at the Ukrainian Pavilion at the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) in Baku.

Ambassadors and government representatives from the EU, the USA, Sweden, Estonia, Croatia, Romania, Poland, Finland, Lithuania, Germany, UNEP, UNECE, OECD, IRENA and others who took part in the discussion, including the countries co-chairing the working group on environmental security, expressed their support for Ukraine in its efforts to end the war and restore the environment and justice.

Andriy Yermak, Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine, and Oleksandr Bevz, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President, addressed the participants online.

Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, stressed that discussions on climate change risked losing their meaning if the war in Ukraine continued. “The world is uniting around the fight against the climate crisis, looking for solutions and investing billions to achieve climate goals. But while ambitious projects are being implemented, russia’s war against Ukraine is undermining global efforts, threatening the future of the entire world,” she said.

According to her, more than 60 states and international organisations have already joined the implementation of Point 8 of the Peace Formula, and the number of Ukraine’s partners is constantly growing. After all, Point 8 of the Peace Formula unites allies around addressing the environmental impact of hostilities.

“Today, Ukraine is the epicentre of ecosystem destruction due to hostilities. We present to the world unique methodologies and analytical approaches that rethink the environmental impact of wars,” said Svitlana Grynchuk.
