On 21 September, the European Sports Week was officially opened in Kyiv on Kontraktova Square. The event brought together the Minister of Youth and Sports of Ukraine Matvii Bidnyi, President of the National Olympic Committee Vadym Gutzeit, and representatives of diplomatic missions in Ukraine.
The European Sports Week is an initiative of the European Commission aimed at promoting physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. The event is held annually in the last week of September and covers all European countries. Since 2018, Ukraine has also been participating in this European initiative.
The events in Ukraine were organised by the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Ukraine and the Sport for All State Institution, with the support of the Active Parks programme of the President of Ukraine, the European Commission, the #BeActive initiative and the NOC of Ukraine.
As part of the European Sports Week, sports and recreation events are taking place in seven Ukrainian cities between 20 and 29 September.
The events are being held in Kyiv, Ivano-Frankivsk, Uzhhorod, Poltava, Ternopil, Chernivtsi and Khmelnytskyi.
This year, both Olympic and non-Olympic sports are represented at the venues. These include athletics, judo, basketball, rugby, kayaking, karate, mixed martial arts and many others.
The European Sports Week aims to engage more people in regular physical activity and motivate people to do sports throughout the year.
