  • Svitlana Grynchuk discusses current areas of environmental cooperation with Japan’s Environment Minister Keiichiro Asao

Svitlana Grynchuk, Minister of Environmental Protection and Natural Resources of Ukraine, and Keiichiro Asao, Minister of the Environment of Japan, discussed current areas of cooperation in the environmental sphere. In particular, they discussed demolition waste management, green technologies, the impact of hostilities on the environment and the implementation of Point 8 of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Peace Formula.

The parties also focused on the implementation of the memorandum of cooperation within the Joint Crediting Mechanism (JCM), signed in February this year, agreeing to expedite its implementation and identify potential areas for specific projects within the JCM. Keiichiro Asao assured of Japan’s support for Ukraine’s environmental ambitions and continued practical steps despite the war. Currently, the procedure for establishing the JCM Joint Committee is being finalised and preparations for training events for Ukrainian government officials and technical specialists have been launched.

“Ukraine appreciates Japan’s expertise in implementing green innovations and is ready to deepen cooperation in all relevant areas. We have many opportunities in various fields, as climate is an area that affects all sectors of the economy and requires modern technologies in particular. The Japan International Cooperation Agency, JICA, is helping us in this regard,” said Svitlana Grynchuk.

The Ukrainian Minister thanked Keiichiro Asao for Japan’s crucial support during the war.
