Minister of Defence of Ukraine General of the Army of Ukraine Stepan Poltorak held talks with Delegation of the US Senate led by the United States Senator Rob Portman, Co-Chair of the Senate Ukraine Caucus.
General Poltorak spoke about defence reform and progress achieved.
“We have been reforming our army for about two years. We have ambitious goals and tasks with regards to implementing and integrating NATO standards, as well as increasing capabilities”, the Minister said and praised the assistance provided by the United States to Ukraine and efficiency of advisory consultations. “The best example of our effective work is adoption in a first reading of the Law of Ukraine On National Security of Ukraine”.
According to the head of defence ministry, this document is very important, it underpins all key line of reforms. It contributes to more efficient cooperation with the Alliance.
“During all these years of conflict we have demonstrated the world that we can defend our country even at the expense of our lives”, Stepan Poltorak underscored, “Ukraine is on the peace side and knows the ongoing conflict should be resolved politically and diplomatically.
Meanwhile, the Minister stressed the necessity to form a strong army.
“While meeting with Ukrainian soldiers, I saw they are proud, courageous, they are professionals and they are committed”, Rob Portman said.
The parties also discussed development of cooperation and its prospects.
