Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, posted 20 June 2023 16:18

The project Shchedryk or Carol for Charity won the first Silver Lion for Ukraine in the Radio & Audio category (Not-for-profit / Charity / Government). In addition, the project was shortlisted in 5 categories: Radio & Audio (Use of Music), Radio & Audio (Audio Led Creativity), Media (Use of Audio Platforms), Entertainment Lions For Music (Use of Licensed / Adapted Music), and Mobile (Mobile Social / Social Purpose).

“The first Silver of the Cannes Lions is an important award and recognition of Ukraine’s success in the field of public diplomacy. I congratulate the project team who achieved this result thanks to an unconventional approach and reinterpretation of the world-famous work of Ukrainian composer Mykola Leontovych. We have once again managed to enchant the world not only with the beauty of Shchedryk, but also with its important humanitarian mission – to help little Ukrainians in the face of full-scale russian aggression,” said Dmytro Kuleba, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

    About Carol for Charity

On the eve of Christmas 2022, a team of representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Saatchi & Saatchi Ukraine and the BRAND UKRAINE NGO updated the words of the world-famous Shchedryk by Mykola Leontovych. This is how the Carol for Charity was created, which told in English about the realities of war and the feelings of Ukrainians, and encouraged people to turn on Shazam and donate to support Ukrainian children.

The carol was performed by Taras Topolya of the Antytila band, the Ukrainian National Choir Veryovka and the Children Folk Ensemble Zernyatko during another massive russian missile strike on Kyiv in November 2022. The updated Shchedryk was first heard before Christmas in December and then sung live on national television in the presence of President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy. Subsequently, the piece was broadcast on 22 radio stations in 11 countries.
